Why is aeration usually performed in the spring?

Grass is under less temperature stress

Aeration is done when the turf can recover quickly from the disturbance and still grow strongly, which in many regions is in spring as cool-season grass transitions from winter dormancy to active growth. Because the grass isn’t facing hot summer temperatures, it experiences less temperature stress and can push out new roots and shoots to fill in the holes left by the aeration. This timing also helps relieve soil compaction and improves air, water, and nutrient movement just as the plant begins its best growth phase. The other reasons aren’t the main driver—spring moisture levels and regulatory requirements aren’t the key factor, and the idea that tasks are faster in spring isn’t the primary consideration.

It is quicker to complete tasks in spring

Soil moisture is highest in spring

Pesticide regulations require spring aeration
